Cozy Camping Bear

This piece grew out of a family trip to Breckenridge, Colorado, and the kind of scene I love building for a picture book, a small character tucked into a big, beautiful world.

My approach:

• I set the view from a high point looking down over the mountains, as if you're about to make your way down to visit the bear's campsite tucked below

• I imagined a friendly bear camping right alongside us, roasting a hotdog by his retro camper while a kayaker drifts along the river below

• Personality mattered most here. I wanted his relaxed, easygoing demeanor to come through clearly, along with playful little details tucked around the campground

• I aimed for a mix of adventure, whimsy, and calm, the kind of scene I'd want to see in a child's room
