Adventure Awaits

This piece grew out of an idea for a picture book concept, a baby elephant and his feathered companions setting off on a hot air balloon adventure with no destination in mind.

My approach:

• I wanted the whole scene to feel like drifting, the hills, seas, and fields below turning into a soft patchwork the higher the balloon climbs

• The baby elephant and his feathered companions are the heart of it. I wanted their expressions to carry that childlike sense of curiosity, excited for what's next without needing to know exactly where they're headed

• Color and light do a lot of the storytelling here, keeping the mood soft and wondrous rather than busy
